Background

Homeless in Warren County

Warren County has a growing number of homeless families‚ and about 30% or more of these homeless are children whose average age is nine. Community Transitional Housing Project was formed to address the need for family housing and support services by a group of concerned citizens‚ nonprofit leaders‚ and the local Ministerial Association.

What We Do

CTHP’s mission is to provide transitional housing and life skills training for homeless families in Warren County. We work with and accept applications for clients from other agencies serving this population such as C–CAP‚ the Warren County Council on Domestic Violence‚ House of Hope and the Department of Social Services.

CTHP is not emergency housing‚ but a full program to house an individual or family. Then with wrap–around case management‚ and with mentors from local churches‚ we connect them to all the social services the community has to offer‚ in order to help them work their way through the obstacles that brought them to homelessness in the first place. Our goal is to see our client families be able to rejoin our community as fully contributing members.

How We Got Started

The Project was begun with a start–up grant from the Episcopal Dioceses of Virginia. CTHP has also received a grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) thanks to the office of Congressman Frank Wolf‚ and from the Speer Foundation for case management. We are also being generously supported by donations from the community and local businesses.

We see this as a pilot project that will provide a model for other churches and organizations in the community to join in creating other much–needed units to house the participants of the program. So‚ while it is a small beginning‚ the project has the potential of both educating the community about homelessness and also providing much needed housing along with the wrap around case management that would assure the success of the clients.

CTHP is a 501(c)(3) organization.
